The Remembrances

The Remembrances are Elemental Crystals with nigh infinite power. They are indestructible and any damage done to them will be deflected right back. They are at the epicenter of many of the conflicts in Afersis and many people, organizations and Kingdoms want their power. One of The Defiance's main goals are to protect and contain The Remembrances to that no one can use them, not even themselves. There are a total of 11 confirmed Remembrances but many believe more than that has existed in the history of Afersis. Most of which were created by the Donstropians. Here is a list of all of them:

The Creation of Remembrances

How Remembrances are created was revealed in Session 25 (?) but was hinted at during Session 16. Remembrances are created through a process of gathering vast amounts of blood and infusing it into an elemental crystal. The type of crystal, amount of blood, who blood it is, and the circumstances of which the process is derived all factor into what kind of Remembrance is created. The Donstropians mastered and refined the craft and created multiple with The Old Stratus Temple being a "factory" of sorts for them. The idea to invest time in the production of Remembrances was first brought up by Frozo Firitu in Proposal of Remembrances. However, more crude versions of Remembrances can be created by hand or even in the wild. An example is The Mountain Remembrance which was created naturally in The Chasm of Afersis and (2nd) Swamp Remembrance which was created by Morass Rizk II using his own Elemental Magic and the power of Suneru.

Absorbing a Remembrance

Remembrances are strongly linked to attaining godhood. "Absorbing" a Remembrance means reaching infinite Affinity within the element of The Remembrance, this means in practice becoming a God. The exact way of absorbing a Remembrance has varied from creature to creature. Some swallow it, others try to crush it and yet others hold it to themselves and focus. Since Remembrances reflect any damage it can be difficult to handle them and it's a high likelihood that most creatures cannot even try to absorb a Remembrance.

Categories of Remembrances

A The map of Afersis

The Remembrances are categorized and ranked in 5 different categories to explain their abilities, weaknesses, and strengths. It is to be mentioned that no one Remembrance is weak however the strength between Remembrances can vary greatly. The 5 categories are: Volume, Purity, Specialty, Strength and Potential. Volume refers to the amount of blood used to create The Remembrance. More blood used equals a larger Remembrance but if the blood is not of quality this usually results in a weaker Remembrance. Purity instead describes how "good" the blood is, even if the purity is high a lack of volume still results in a weaker Remembrance. Specialty refers to how special the power of The Remembrance is, in other words, how many different abilities it can have. Some Remembrances have "secret abilities" which really are multiple, often unintuitive, ways of using The Remembrace. Strength might seem like an unnecessary category because it nullifies everything else however it isn't. Strength only refers to how easy/hard it is to counter the powers of said Remembrance. If the power of The Remembrance is to move something, a high strength means that interfering objects or magic will only affect the output of The Remembrance marginally. Finally Potential refers to how well a Remembrance scales, or rather depends on its user. If The Remembrance has a high potential it means that a low-level sorcerer only can use it to a small degree. Low potential means almost everyone can use it to its fullest potential, which in turn means it's weaker, (or stronger depending on how you see things).

This chart is used to visualize the weaknesses and strengths of Remembrances. All categories receive a rank from 1-5 and in some cases 0 which means they cannot be ranked. This is usually because said Remembrance either can't be fully categorized or "breaks the scale".

Trivia

  • The word "Remembrance" is a combination of the three Dragon (Language) words: "Reme" (Pure), "Mebr" (Part of/member), and "Ance" (Blood). This means that a literal interpretation of the word is "Pure Part of Blood".
  • The Remembrances were only known as "The Crystals" back in Afersis Act 1 and did not get their name until the planing of Afersis Act 3.
